Working with the criminal and juvenile justice systems in Westchester County, the Probation Department enhances community safety through service, accountability, and influencing change. Here are some interesting facts:
- There are over 150 probation officers.
- There are over 25 supervising probation officers.
- Approximately 1/3 of the department is bilingual in English and Spanish
- There are over 30 instructors within the department who are New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services certified general topics, weapons, motivational interviewing, crisis intervention, etc.
- Of the 12 firearms instructors in the department, four were trained by the FBI.
- The department has four master instructors certified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services
- The Bureau of Planning and Development is responsible for training all sworn staff.
- All sworn probation officers must attain 21 hours of training annually, as mandated by New York State Office of Probation & Correction Alternatives.
- Probation has conducted trainings with the county's Department of Corrections and Public Safety.
- All of our mandatory trainings are opened to other municipalities and county agencies (when applicable), if space is available.
