Probation Department Facts

Working with the criminal and juvenile justice systems in Westchester County, the Probation Department enhances community safety through service, accountability, and influencing change. Here are some interesting facts:

  • There are over 150 probation officers.
  • There are over 25 supervising probation officers.
  • Approximately 1/3 of the department is bilingual in English and Spanish
  • There are over 30 instructors within the department who are New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services certified general topics, weapons, motivational interviewing, crisis intervention, etc.
  • Of the 12 firearms instructors in the department, four were trained by the FBI.
  • The department has four master instructors certified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services
  • The Bureau of Planning and Development is responsible for training all sworn staff.
  • All sworn probation officers must attain 21 hours of training annually, as mandated by New York State Office of Probation & Correction Alternatives.
  • Probation has conducted trainings with the county's Department of Corrections and Public Safety.
  • All of our mandatory trainings are opened to other municipalities and county agencies (when applicable), if space is available.
