The probation department has approximately 1,500 misdemeanor and felony cases under its supervision involving drinking (and/or drugging) and driving-related offenses. Probation also monitors over 350 conditional discharge cases where ignition interlock was ordered. DWI felons typically have a documented history of DWI offenses; many are classified as hardcore drunk drivers whose BAC at the time of arrest was .16 or above (twice the legal limit).
Probation officers in this unit have the dual role of protecting the public from impaired drivers and insuring that problem drinkers obtain appropriate treatment and support to maintain their sobriety. The DWI Unit strives to enhance community protection by reducing incidents of "Driving While Intoxicated" and "Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle" among probationers convicted of alcohol/drug-related offenses.
