On May 4th, 2021, the Governor signed into law the automatic restoration of voting rights to a person upon release from a New York State correctional facility. The person must still register to vote like any other individual in the state. If they were registered to vote before incarceration, they must re-register with the Board of Elections. Individuals being released upon expiration of their sentence will receive voter information and a registration packet upon release.
Individuals on Probation do not lose their right to vote. Individuals who receive a spilt sentence of jail and probation are eligible to vote as soon as they complete their jail time.
